Alert Bay "Home of the Killer Whale"
Located
on Cormorant Island, Alert Bay is more than a charming fishing
village. It is the repository of thousands of years of First
Nations art and culture.
The U'mista Cultural
Centre displays a world class collection of Kwakwaka'wakw
art and artifacts. The Centre's principal theme is the potlatch
ceremony...its origins, meaning, ritual, its ultimate suppression
and its present renaissance as a vital aspect of Native culture.
There is also a Library-Museum, which is located beside the
Visitor Information Centre.
Alert Bay today
is an exciting mix of recreational and cultural opportunities
for the visitor. Hiking trails, Native tours, First Nation
Dance performance (July & August in the Traditional Big
House),
Kayaking, Fishing
charters, and some fine accommodations and dining.
To make your stay
in Alert Bay totally unforgettable...take a stroll on the
boardwalk, over and through the Ecological Park...an exquisitely
beautiful cedar swamp.
