This 6 day Broughton Archipelago tour concentrates on the
many islands and channels that adjoin Johnstone and Queen
Charlotte Straits.
Historically this
area was, and still is, home to the kwakwaka'wakw native culture.
During our trip we will see evidence of past and present native
use of the land and sea. More recently this area was home
to homesteaders, fisherman and loggers. Only a few small communities
still exist in this wilderness but we will have an opportunity
to visit one and tour it’s museum with artifacts from
the area that range in age from a few decades old to thousands
of years old.
The Broughton Archipelago is an important ecological area
and acts as a nursery for millions of fish. All of these fish
attract a wide range of larger wildlife like seals, sea lions,
eagles, bears, dolphins and whales. Much of our paddling will
be in the more protected inner passages of the archipelago
but if conditions are favourable we may also explore some
of the more exposed islets and reefs along Queen Charlotte
Strait that are home to large sea bird colonies.
