Sointula, A Taste of Utopia
On Malcolm Island you will find a unique blend of history,
nature and fishing. It is a beautiful friendly place to "slow
down and stay a while". Sointula means "place of harmony"
and relates to the Island's Finnish roots. Sointula was settled
by these hardy Scandinavian immigrants at the turn of the
20th century. Led by a visionary/writer, they leased Malcolm
Island from the province and engaged in a social experiment
in communal living. An initial attempt at farming failed and
they turned to fishing.
Take a stroll form
the ferry dock or walk from your moorage at the Lion's Harbour
past interesting old fishing sheds...everything is in short
walking distance. There is a museum which chronicles the early
settlers' tragedies and triumphs;Bere Point is a wonderful
place to camp in your tent or camper...with a good chance
to sight killer whales in Queen Charlotte Strait.
Sointula is a beautiful
place to relax and design your own adventure. Call us today
so we can help you plan your vacation.
